What we see on Pekin homes

The median house in Pekin was built in 1962, and 61.3% of the housing stock there predates 1970. 14,733 housing units, 66.8% of the occupied ones owner-occupied. That leaves a real share of rented property, and a landlord asks different questions than an owner: what fails soonest, what a tenant will call about. The quote is the same either way. 20.7% of it predates 1940, which usually means cast iron, a floor that has taken eighty years of water, and a room never laid out for a modern shower. The cast iron goes with us.

Bathrooms in postwar houses are typically five feet across with the tub at one end, and the tile is either original or an eighties refresh laid over the top of it. Where those rooms fail is the grout at the tub-to-wall joint. Water has been getting behind it for years by the time anyone notices the floor flexing. Once the surround is out we can see how far it traveled, and that is the point where the honest scope of the job becomes clear. On a tub swap specifically, what decides the day is what the old tub is made of and how it gets out of the room.

What the water does here

Illinois American Water, Pekin District publishes a total hardness of 28 grains per gallon for Pekin, 470 mg/L as calcium carbonate, which is very hard.

Water that hard is why a tiled shower in Pekin looks tired years before it should. Calcium comes out of solution on every surface it touches, and grout is porous, so it goes into the joint rather than sitting on top of it. No amount of scrubbing gets it back out. A non-porous High Performance Polymer Acrylic surround has no joint for it to get into, which is most of the reason people who have replaced one do not go back to tile.

Permits and paperwork in Pekin

In Pekin, work like this is permitted through City of Pekin Inspections Department. Whether yours needs a permit is a question of scope, and it gets answered before anyone starts. Pulling it is our job. So is being on site when the inspector comes.

We are licensed and insured. Ask for the certificate and you will have it the same day, not after a second phone call.

Where we work from, and what is nearby

Pekin, IL sits in Tazewell County, and we serve it from our Central Illinois office at 402 S. Main St., Creve Coeur, IL 61610.

In Pekin that is 61554. If your ZIP is not on that list, call anyway. The list is where we work most, not a fence.

What we can put on a Pekin house

Liquid Accents walk-in tubs for step-in safety and hydrotherapy, and BCI Bathrooms tubs, wall systems and surrounds. Accessibility is a decision you make at design rather than an addition afterwards: a low threshold instead of a wall to climb over, a seat, grab bars set into the wall rather than screwed onto it.

There is a showroom at 402 S. Main St., Creve Coeur, IL 61610. Color on a screen is not color in daylight, and a sample chip is not a panel, so it is worth the drive before you commit to either.

Two things people in Pekin ask

Do I need a permit for this in Pekin?

It depends on the scope, and City of Pekin Inspections Department is the office that decides. We check before the crew is booked and we pull the permit when one is needed, so it is never something you find out about halfway through.

My experience starts with Rodger Barton. In Turkish time and spent quite a bit of time with me telling me what was going to happen and how it was going to happen and who was going to make it happen. Instant a young man by the name of Adrian to do the work. Adrian exceed my expectations on how my bathroom was going to be transformed. Once he started he worked till 8:00 that evening and came back the next morning at 8:00 to finish the product. He not only installed my new shower and took out the old bathtub but he also installed a new vanity and a new toilet and when he was all installing he went to caulking everything the way it should be. There are not enough words in my vocabulary to explain how happy I am and proud of what he done with my bathroom. It is absolutely beautiful. If anybody is considering a bathroom remodel they should get ahold of this company. They tell you what they are going to do and then they do it

First of all I want to give two thumbs up to Adrian!! He's amazing!! He really put in a lot effort & hard work on what he does!! The communication that he had with me & my Son were amazing! He remodeled, my bathroom in 21/2 days he would start early in the morning & work late at night. I would tell him how good of a job he did & how happy I was to have him as my contractor. He was a gentleman, respectful, kind he has a lot of patience. If he came across a problem it wouldn't take him long to figure out how to fix it. It's like he made it his own & what I mean by that like if he wasn't satisfied with the way he performed the work.He will make it way better to his as well as my satisfaction!! If & when I need work done on the inside or outside of my house I would want no other contractor but Adrian. I've already told my boss & people are my job. I showed them pictures of the work that Adrian did in my bathroom & they gave him thumbs up they complimented him on the work that he did in my bathroom.. Thanks for all the hard work all looks amazing. He installed my jet tub, vanity, mirror, toilet, walls around my tub, exhaust fan, floor, lights above vanity & boarders around floor & door. Adrian keep up the good work!! We can't thank you enough all that you did to make our bathroom so beautiful. It's bringing tears to my eyes on how beautiful of a job you did in my bathroom. I can't stop looking at it. Thanks again

First off, Adrian is AMAZING. I really cannot say enough about what a good job he did on our bathroom. A craftsman is known by his finish work, and Adrian did absolutely stellar finish work. (Along with a great job on everything else.) He went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied with the job, and we most definitely are satisfied. Five stars — nay, six — are EASILY deserved based on the way our bathroom ended up. I will update this review with pictures as soon as I can get some that will show it off properly. However, honesty requires me to say that Adrian was not our original installer. I'll skip the full saga, but let's just say the first attempt left a lot to be desired. Our bathroom looked like a cheap motel, with huge beads of messy caulk attempting to cover the gaps of poor cuts, a drain that leaked if we tried to take a bath, shelves that collected water instead of shedding it, a 34-inch cut in the top edge of our tub as if from a razor blade, and other various and sundry problems. Making a long story short, it took almost a year of diligent follow-up on my part before I could even get a manager to come out and see what was going on, much less get any resolution. (To be fair, they did send out another installer at one point, who scraped out the original caulk and replaced it with even wider beads of bright-white window caulk, giving the whole thing a strange coloring-book vibe. This caulk didn't even adhere to the shower walls properly, and began falling out after a few days.) Finally, I mentioned that I'd been patient enough, and was getting ready to write my Google review, including pictures. That's when the owner got involved, and things finally started to happen. The manager finally came over, and brought Adrian. Adrian looked everything over, then got to work, and I have to say, the guy practically worked a miracle. To say that Adrian "fixed" everything that was wrong would be a gross understatement. Several parts had to be replaced. Others were able to be repaired (in fact, Adrian repaired the cut in the tub so well you can't even see it ever happened.) Some of the repairs required some trim work, and Adrian did an amazing job with that as well. He fixed the leaks and even replaced some corroded drain pipe. Frankly, the end result was a significant upgrade from what we had originally expected. I certainly never expected such an excellent result after the first two installers had come and gone. Every business makes mistakes sometimes, but you can tell the good from the bad in how they handle them. In the end, I wish it hadn't taken almost a year of me following up (sometimes multiple times per week) for Perfect Choice to make things right, but they did eventually come through, and at no small cost. And credit where credit is due — they even included some new ancillary materials that weren't part of the original job, but that became necessary to take care of the problems caused by it. So ultimately, they did have our backs after all. And so, everything ends happily ever after. The only thing left to say is, if you choose Perfect Choice for your home, might I suggest asking for Adrian by name? Based on our experience, you couldn't do any better!

Adrian did our tub to shower conversion and he went above & beyond to ensure it was exactly what we wanted. He checked with us at each step & consistently communicated his progress during construction. His attention to detail and insanely impressive work ethic are seen in the amazing work he did for us.
